Strategic aims

To be the lead organisation in influencing policy and practice in the public, private and voluntary sectors on issues relating to older people, age and ageing:

To take a lead role in developing and maintaining community infrastructures which maximise the potential and opportunities for older people

To be the key organisation in promoting and enabling the involvement of older people in decision making at all levels

To ensure that older people have access to quality public information services

Strategic Objectives:

  • to ensure that public policy is beneficial to older people
  • to raise public awareness of age-related issues
  • to develop a working relationship with every local authority and NHS board in Scotland and establish new strategic partnerships in order to deliver our aims
  • to promote good practice relating to older people, age, and ageing
  • To engage with other stakeholders to ensure that older people are a public policy priority
  • to engage with other stakeholders to develop a national strategy for an ageing population
  • To increase and develop Age Concern membership and the Age Concern Federation in Scotland
  • to increase the involvement of older people in the work of Age Concern Scotland particularly in relation to hard to reach older people
  • to increase the participation of older people in planning and decision making at all levels
  • To ensure that older people are fully informed about their rights and opportunities
  • to deliver an enhanced public information service for older people
  • to develop a responsive network of public information services for older people
  • to develop and support initiatives which promote health, well-being and opportunities for older people in their communities and beyond

Age Concern Scotland’s principles of practice

  • Ageism is unacceptable
  • All people have the right to make decisions about their lives
  • People less able to help themselves should be offered support
  • Diversity is valued in all that we do
  • Unity is our strength

Age Concern Scotland must:

  • ensure that the views of older people are uppermost
  • promote the rights of older people
  • take the lead and promote public debate
  • inform and educate

Our work must:

  • be based on sound knowledge of older people’s everyday lives
  • be based on good research
  • be practicable
  • be clear and in simple language

Wherever possible, our work must ensure:

  • the needs of older people are met
  • that older people have power and control over their own lives
  • that older people have information
  • that older people have independence
  • the dignity of old age

Wherever possible, our work must be relevant to the concerns of:

  • minority and disadvantaged groups
  • urban and rural areas
  • carers

Wherever possible, our work must encourage:

  • the quality of services
  • positive attitudes to older people
  • a positive self image for older people
  • openness, accessibility and collaboration
  • equality of opportunity and access

Within Age Concern Scotland, we must:

  • strive for quality in every area of activity we are engaged in or can influence
  • promote good working practices and ensure compliance with legislation
  • Through investment in training and development, encourage staff to maximise their potential to contribute to the organisation’s objectives.
